Chapter 35

Washington DC

Oval Office

Word of the ‘Z’ Creature’s attack at the border of Ohio and West Virginia reached the White House nearly instantly. Atwood Colter knew that this was where the vaccine doses had been administered. The first fearful report said that the lines had been breached and overrun but the later reports were that the Army turned back the creatures and that the lines had held.

Colter approached General Casey who was just off the phone with the forward command.

Colter asked, “What’s the word, General?”

“Massive attack, Atwood. A hundred thousand or more of ‘Z’ rushed the lines. General Morris was severely injured.”

“What happened to the General?”

“He was bitten.”

“Did he change?”

“No.”

“Then the vaccine worked?”

“The information is just arriving. The point of attack is still in disarray, heavy casualties.”

“I want that information about the vaccinated.”

“You’ll have it.”

Colter changed the direction of the discussion, “So, all the creatures were killed?”

“No. The report said that they attacked, but just stopped attacking and continued their procession to the west. It was reported that the number of ‘Z’ still in the area and walking forward was probably in the millions.”

“Huh? That doesn’t seem to be the way they normally act. Once they’re agitated, don’t they usually all attack relentlessly?”

“That’s been the pattern, at least as far as we’ve observed, but we don’t understand them. We don’t know, for sure, that this isn’t something they might do. We just don’t know.”

“Are you going to attack this mass of creatures?”

“Not at this time. They seem to be moving away from our defensive positions. We feel that it would be like poking a bear. After the last limited attack, we don’t think our lines will hold up against another. There are so many creatures that they are covering states, not just miles.”

Colter nodded bleakly then said, “Get me the information about the vaccinated soldiers. I want to know how many were bitten and if the vaccine worked for everyone.”

“That shouldn’t be a problem. We are sending reinforcements to the attacked lines in Ohio. I will get in touch with the medical staff for that information once it’s compiled.”

Colter nodded and walked away.
